Against the backdrop of tight housing markets, particularly in cities and conurbations, the German Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Affairs, together with the BBSR, set an accent on the topic of affordable housing at the end of 2015 with the “Funding Program for Model Projects for the Sustainable and Affordable Construction of Variovariable Housing”. The primary objective of the model projects realized under the funding program was to fulfill the tasks of the federal government in the areas of demographic change, sustainability as well as rationalization of construction processes through research in the construction sector.

Through the Variowohn model projects, the theoretical principles of providing affordable housing through rapid, low-cost construction were put to the test across a very broad spectrum. The model projects provided insights regarding adaptable building structures and affordable, space-efficient, and sustainable construction and housing.

The accompanying research, which started in May 2017, focused on practical, scientific analysis during the construction process. The projects were examined for their practicality and exemplary character. The focus was on the topics of construction technology, construction process and construction quality.

This publication presents the key findings of the accompanying research in the form of recommendations for action. The model projects and international comparative projects are presented in the form of profiles in words and pictures. Discover here the form about Apartis and the Foundry (PDF).
